Happy New Year to the whole of 2010!
New Year's Revolution
Love 'em or hate 'em, you can't escape New Year's Resolutions. They drop into the topic of conversation along with your party plans, work schedule, and what's for dinner. But ask anyone what their resolutions were from last year and chances are they won't be able to remember. Apparently, the average length of a resolution is just three weeks, before it gets pushed to one side as the demands of daily life take over. So why do we make them? Because in today's day and age when we're all looking for a deeper meaning in life, whether it's the devouring of endless self help books or the year long trip to India, it gives us an undeniable lift which stems from the knowledge that we can better ourselves. And who doesn't want that? In an age where success and achievement has never been more paramount, we will lean on anything that allows us to be hopeful and helps us in achieving our dreams. Yet what stops us in the first place? We have more money and more resources than ever before. (Ask your Gran if she ever felt the need to find herself). It's almost like we have too much choice. Nothing is new. The 30-something check list: travelled the world - check. Bought the house - check. Got a great job - check. Found a life partner - check. So what next? Find the meaning of life. Well, here's what I've realised; we're living the meaning of life every single day. We make choices about how we want to live our life and most of us are lucky enough to be able change what we don't like. Do we really need to wait for New Year to make such resolutions? I think not. So my resolution is to keep making those pacts with myself and keep trying to be a better person, whether its January 1st or mid July.
